Google In 2023: How The Phase-Out Of Third-Party Cookies Will Affect Affiliate Marketers

What do Affiliate marketers and captain kangaroo have in common? They both LOVE cookies.

For years, Affiliate marketers & Brands have been using third-party cookies to track website visitors, improve the user experience, and collect data that helps us target ads to the right audiences. We also use them to learn about what our visitors are checking out online when they aren't on our websites.

Google has announced that it will delay plans to phase out third-party cookies in its Chrome browse till 2023. Sound Awful?

The first thing to understand about what Google is doing with third-party cookies is that it's not really restricting the advertiser. They're just making it more difficult for the advertiser to track conversions on their own website thereby giving the user(audience) control over how their data is used. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It will only result in a reduction in the number of information users share.

“Google believes the web community needs to come together to develop a set of open standards to fundamentally enhance privacy on the web, giving people more transparency and greater control over how their data is used,” said Chrome Privacy Engineering Director Vinay Goel in a statement.

In the place of cookies, Google implements its own Privacy Sandbox system. This will still allow websites to show targeted ads while reducing the number of information users share.

While similar browsers like Firefox and Safari have already taken moves against third-party cookies, Chrome’s market dominance, with almost 65% of global market share, will have a major impact on digital advertising.

As part of its new timeline, Google said that it aims to deploy the technologies by late 2022 to give time for developers to start adopting them. The company can then begin phasing out cookies over a three-month period, starting in mid-2023 and ending in late 2023
